Staying a Moment on Oahu Before Heading to Maui?

Oahu transportation system makes is easy to visit the Honolulu-Waikiki area. The airport is located only 6 miles from downtown Honolulu and a few miles away from Waikiki beaches.

If you are staying a couple of days on Oahu (or maybe more) before heading to Maui, there are many ways for you to reach your nearby hotel or a more remote rental.

Waikiki Express

A very convenient shuttle service called the Waikiki Express serves Waikiki's hotels 24h a day. Simple and efficient. A good choice if your are staying in Waikiki's area.

The Bus

A city bus system called The Bus serves the wider Honolulu-Waikiki area. This is the local bus system part of Oahu transportation services. If you want to get a feel of the 'local life', 'The Bus' is for you.

Taxi

If you prefer more privacy and decide to use a taxi, you can grab one at the airport just outside the baggage claim area. Getting from Honolulu Airport to Waikiki should cost you around 40$-50$.

Car Rentals

If you prefer to drive, all major Car Rental companies are represented at the Honolulu Hawaii Airport: Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz, National, Alamo, Enterprise, Rent A Car, Thrifty and more.

They are located very close to the terminal and connected by shuttle buses. All you have to do is wait a few minutes for your car rental company shuttle to come by and jump in. It's simple and free!

Avoid bad surprises. Do not wait to be in Hawaii before booking your car.

Why?

First, you will get better deals online.

Second, you don't want to get stuck in the airport's rental agencies lobby, waiting in line for hours, hoping there will still be a car available for you when you finally get to the desk.

Getting Back to Hawaii Airport

When comes the time to get back to Honolulu to catch the Airport shuttle to Maui, simply use your favorite means of transportation (Waikiki Express, The Bus, Taxi or Car Rental).

If you are driving, use the H-1 Interstate Freeway, coming either eastbound or westbound. Look for the 'HNL Airport' exit. Once at the Airport, follow the signs leading to your Car Rental drop-off.
