Flying with Hawaiian Airline

What Interisland Carrier Should I Choose to Fly to Maui?

Hawaiian Airline is the largest Hawaii-based airline. If you are planning to visit Maui or another Hawaii island, chances are you will fly with this Airline.

The carrier is in business since 1929 and was once called Inter-Island Airways Ltd. It currently serves 19 destinations through its Honolulu hub. Almost half of the seats offered at the Honolulu Airport come from Hawaiian.

Hawaiian Airlines, also called HAL (OACI code), provides a daily service between 5 destinations on the four Hawaiian Islands (Hilo, Honolulu, Kahului, Kailua-Kona, Lihue).

A fleet of Boeing 717-200 jets, with a seating capacity of 123 passengers, is in used to assure these interisland flights.

Does That Mean I should Book with HAL?

Sincerely, in my opinion, it doesn't matter that much which inter island carrier you choose. This is a pretty short and inexpensive flight.

That being said, I choose Hawaiian every time I had to connect from Oahu to Maui, Kauai or Big Island. And every time, I was pleased with the results.

Then again, it's only a short 30 minutes or so in the air. Not much to criticize. But my tickets were not overbooked, the plane left on time and the crew served me the traditional cup of 'fruit nectar' with a beautiful Hawaiian smile. A sure bet.

Second Opinion...

In case you would like a second opinion (always a good idea), visit the Awards and Recognition section of HAL website. You will see that the company earned a bunch of awards for the quality of its service.

It has even been rated the nation's top-ranked carrier for service quality in 2008 as reported by the 19th annual national Airline Quality Rating (AQR).

I guess the cup of fruit nectar makes all the difference... or it might be the smiles! You decide!

Seriously, if I were you, I would be checking Hawaiian Air first if the rates they proposed are good the day you plan your inter island flight. If you are fine with the rates, then book directly on HAL's website. If you are not sure, there are other options. Read on.

Is HAL the Only Hawaii Interisland Carrier?

If you want another option, you can have a look at Go! and Mokulele Airlines. In fact the two airlines are now working together under the Go!Mokulele Airlines banner.

If you prefer to book your inter island ticket and your continental flight in one single transaction, then I would suggest you visit my cheap airfare to Maui page and use one of the online solution I recommend. It's easy and efficient. For more flight tickets discounts, go to the Maui Deals page.
